The Xth Anniversary International Nuclear Forum “Safety of Nuclear Technologies: Transport of Radioactive Materials” ATOMTRANS-2015 opened its work in Saint-Petersburg

Between 5 and 9th October, 2015 Saint-Petersburg hosted regular International Nuclear Forum “Safety of Nuclear Technologies”.

The opening ceremony of the Xth Anniversary International Nuclear Forum “Safety of Nuclear Technologies: Transport of Radioactive Materials” ATOMTRANS-2015 took place on October 6 , 2015 in Saint-Petersburg’s branch of ROSATOM Central Institute for Continuing Education and Training (ROSATOM-CICE&T).

The purposes of this Forum were to discuss national and international experience accumulated, status and prospects regarding transportation of different types of radioactive materials, the corresponding scientific and engineering, legal, social and political aspects, as well as to develop solutions to challenges in the course of nuclear and radiation safety ensuring along with physical security when performing transportation of radioactive materials.

This Forum is recognized as one of the most meaningful events of Russian atomic industry to brought together specialists from the major enterprises and organizations and research institutes of the Russian Federation and foreign countries.

Within this Forum framework it was planned to conduct discussions of the following thematic topics:

• National and international experience, perspectives of radioactive materials transportation; technologies, logistic activities and transport resources;
• Activities of the competent state authority for nuclear and radiation safety that is in charge for transportation of nuclear materials, radioactive substances and products manufactured by them, including certification of shipping packages and shipments; legal and regulatory framework; development of nuclear and radiation safety requirements, physical protection requirements and requirements for state monitoring implementation;
• Shipping packages for different types of radioactive materials, their designing, manufacturing, testing, calculation and experimental substantiation for safety;
• International organizations and international projects, cross-border movements of radioactive materials;
• Issues of legislative provision of safe uses of atomic energy;
• Provision of nuclear security in the course of transportation of nuclear and other radioactive materials, and holding of large-scale events, and counter- terrorism.

In the programme of this Forum special place was dedicated to exhibition of transport resources and equipment; such exhibition opening was planned on the 7th October, 2015.

Atomic Energy Corporation “Rosatom”, “Emergency and technical centre of Minatom of Russia”, FSUE; “Atomspetstrans”, JSC; “TENEX”, JSC; Research and Development Company “Sosny”, Rosatom Central Institute for Continuing Education and Training (branch in Saint-Petersburg) were co-organizers of this Forum.

The representatives from the Federation Council and State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Rostechnadzor, Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia (FMBA), the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, Federal Agency for Sea and Inland Water Transport, Russian Academy of Sciences, management staff and specialists from State Corporation “Rosatom” and its subordinated organizations and enterprises, representatives from design and engineering companies, building companies, transportation and logistics companies as well as institutes of higher education took part in this Forum.
